What you need to succeed
A webcam: built into most laptops
Time: put more in, get more out
An open mind, naturally
Some clear space to practice
What you don't need to start
Strength or flexibility
A combat mentality
Martial arts experience
Things we don't do
Make you Bruce Lee overnight
Award you a "color" belt
Give you a false sense of security
You can start with just a laptop, some time and space to practice, and a good attitude. Improvements in balance, coordination, strength and flexibility come naturally as you practice and repeat the forms. If you can follow along with a video and make adjustments during your Insight Sessions with your personal sifu, you will advance in the system and begin reaping more rewards.
What you gain from the system are the wellness benefits, and it's an open secret that there are many for which kung fu is designed, from the core outward. Please note we don't offer kung fu as a self-defense course, though the system we teach is certainly that and more, because teaching true self-defense requires physical contact to properly demonstrate and practice - by its very nature, it can't be learned in a video setting (and you shouldn't believe anyone who tells you otherwise).

At the beginning of your journey, you will have many questions.
1) Is this kung fu system right for me?
Body: Like other fitness systems, kung fu changes your body gradually over time into a more healthful state. You don't have to be in great shape to begin. In fact, we've taught many students with a host of physical issues, adapting the curriculum as necessary. If you have concerns about a permanent injury or disability hindering your progress, speak with a sifu before you enroll.
Mind: You should be open to new ideas and new concepts. Things that feel or seem awkward or impenetrable at first eventually come to light as you progress. This is a necessary part of the journey - one can hear a thing many times, but only believe it once they feel it in their bones.
Spirit: Your willpower is your greatest weapon. Practicing when you've already had a long day, rehearsing a new part when you're not completely confident you've gotten the previous one down cold - these are all situations you'll encounter in your journey, and while you may not always overcome them, the more you strive, the faster you'll progress. Remember this important fact: every single expert is a beginner who didn't quit.
2) Why don't you teach self-defense?
We're all seasoned instructors in a dojo setting, but the global pandemic has changed many people's attitudes toward close physical contact, and opened up learning opportunities like this one.
Principles of combative self-defense are inherent to the system we teach, but from what we've learned over many decades of combined experience, it is impossible to emphasize those principles and effectively teach self-defense without actual hand-to-hand contact. You might learn the motions involved, but knowing how to execute them reliably (in a multitude of possible situations) absolutely requires steady practice with a partner. It doesn't mean that self-defense principles aren't a part of the system we teach.
But while we recognize the limits of the video medium, we also are keenly aware of the many healthful benefits that our system offers far beyond those limits, and that all the core health principles at the heart of the system can be earned by demonstrating a level of proficiency with each form.
In our system, five animals, five elements, and five weapons combine to bring you a health system that can be practiced well into what most of us would consider old age.
3) How much does it cost to learn each month?
Tuition plans start at $49 per month. Student enrollment is billed monthly, with discounts for reserving sessions in advance. With our best plan, membership includes up to 250 minutes per month of one-on-one personal video instruction with our faculty of accredited instructors, and unlimited access to all the video content available at your level of attainment. You unlock new forms, drills and insight videos as you progress through the system.
4) Can I earn a black sash/belt?
Color sashes and belts are not necessary or even helpful in a video learning experience, and can actually slow your development by giving you unreasonable expectations and setting you up for disappointment if you fail to meet or exceed them. Think instead of reaching the next small step in your journey, and the big steps will naturally accumulate.
A black sash in our system means a number of special challenges have been accomplished by the bearer, a careful series of experiences testing not just the body, but also the mind, the spirit and the character. Qualifying as an instructor is even more strenuous. To a large degree, these challenges are impractical, inappropriate, or impossible to accommodate in a video setting, and as traditional martial artists we would fail in our duty to you (and our own long line of instructors) if we awarded color rank in the absence of those crucial tests.
5) Why are the instructors called "Sifu"?
We strongly encourage you to address your instructor as "sifu", which simply means "teacher". Not so much as a title of respect, but to help you adjust to the student/mentor dynamic. Much more importantly, it reminds us constantly that, as your instructors in an ancient and hidden art, every word we speak and direction we give must always steer your feet onto the right path for attainment.
